by CARROLL, Lewis.
Macmillan und Comp, 1869. [12], 178, [2]pp. Original green decorative cloth gilt with medallion illustrations to upper and lower covers. All edges gilt.. Octavo. First edition. First issue. Slight wear to head and heel of spine; slight bubbling of cloth; hinges expertly repaired; else a very good copy of the scarce first issue, contained in a cloth, gilt clamshell box. Presentation copy, inscribed on front free endpaper: 'W. H. Ranken, with the Author's sincere regards march. 1869.' Casson family bookplate. It is believed that this copy was once owned by the actress Dame Sybil Thorndike (Casson). W. H. Ranken (to whom A Valentine, the second poem in Phantasmagoria is addressed,) was a close friend of Dodgson's at Oxford. He later taught English in Germany for a while. They visited Whitby together in 1854, and stories told to children by Dodgson on the shore at Whitby during the visit were thought by Ranken to have been the first germs of Alice in Wonderland. The first issue, which is by far the scarcer of the two, has the London: Macmillan imprint. The second issue, Liepzig: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch. [Attributes: First Edition]

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. (1915 First Deluxe Photoplay Edition in original dust jacket with original gift box)

by Carroll, Lewis (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson)
Grosset & Dunlap, 1915. Carroll, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND & THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, [c. 1915]. First Deluxe oversized (9.5" x 7") Film Photoplay Edition, issued in tandem with the 1915 Silent Film based on the two Lewis Carroll classics. There exists also a smaller trade edition, the first time ever that a movie tie-in printing had been produced in two versions, regular and deluxe. The film was produced by the American Film Manufacturing Company and distributed by the Non-Pareil Film Company, adapted and directed by W. W. Young and starring Viola Savoy. Inside can be found 32 inserted black & white stills from the movie, plus a color frontispiece. A Fine, bright, unworn copy retaining the exceedingly rare Photo Art Dust Jacket which has some light chipping and wear but no restoration or repair. Complete with the original (slightly damaged) 1915 Gift Box which is the only example of this beautifully illustrated box which we've ever encountered. As part of the prelims, there is an account of the film's invite-only opening night at the Strand Theater in New York City. The original film still exists (and can be seen online) minus most of the Looking Glass segment which has been lost over the years. This book is surely the best imaginable artifact in book form of the first full-length (52 minutes) Alice film adaptation. It is arguably a lone survival with the original gift box, but inarguably a truly rare find for those seeking a deluxe edition of this illustrated Alice in dust jacket. by CARROLL, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]
Macmillan and Co, London and New York, 1893. Titles for both volumes continue: "With Forty-Six Illustrations by Harry Furniss." Two 8vo volumes. Pp. xxi, [4], 2-400, followed by three page of publisher ads, [1]; [4], x-xxxi, [1], 2-423, [2], followed by four pages of publisher ads, and then a facsimile of one page of Alice's Adventures Under Ground. Frontis. illustration to each, with tissue guards. Original red cloth, gilt. All edges gilt. General index in Vol. Ii. Light scattered foxing on first and last few leaves of both volumes. Both volumes a bit cocked, with spines faded; first volume with a few small spots on the front board. Armorial bookplate (Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester) on front pastedowns. Both volumes inscribed to "Mrs. Stevens" (Edith Stevens), the mother of Dodgson's last "child-friend," Enid Stevens. Both volumes presented in cloth chemises within three-quarter red morocco clamshell boxes, felt-lined, within a red linen slipcase. Inscriptions read, respectively, "Mrs. Stevens, from the Author. Feb. 28, 1891" and "Mrs. Stevens, with sincere regards, from the Author. Dec. 27, 1893."Edith Stevens (1841-1919) was the mother of Enid Stevens, considered by Dodgson to be the last of his "child-friends." On the very day of the first inscription Dodgson wrote to Edith, stating, "I have lost a considerable fraction (say .25) of my heart to your little daughter: and I hope you will allow me further opportunities of trying whether or no we can become real friends. She would be about my only child-friend in Oxford" (The Letters of Lewis Carroll, p. 825). Dodgson's warm feelings of his friendship with Enid was reciprocated by Enid who, later in life, wrote "we were the very greatest friends," and "I don't think anybody else ever had so much of him as I had . I was the last child-friend."The introductory poem in Sylvie and Bruno contains a double acrostic of the name "Isa Bowman", who was another of Carroll's child-friends; the dedicatory poem in Sylvie and Bruno Concluded contains a single acrostic, "enidstevens" using the third letters of each line. Provenance: Edith Stevens (née Headland, 1841-1919); Sotheby's, 1929; Christies; Christies, 2006. Original cloth with both vols. housed in a morocco slipcase with chemises [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

by DODGSON, Charles L. (LEWIS CARROLL)
Limited Editions Club, New York, 1932. In publisher's heavily gilt-decorated full red morocco leather. With the original illustrations by John Tenniel. Copy #1327 of 1500 with typography and binding by Frederick Warde who has SIGNED the colophon page. Additionally SIGNED for the publisher on a separate page bound in before the title page by Alice Hargreaves, "the original Alice," one of only about 500 copies of the total edition of 1500 copies that were signed by her a few years before her death. Alice refused to sign other editions of this famous book in her lifetime, written by Carroll for her when she was young Alice Liddell, but she was convinced with the help of monetary compensation to sign these copies. She would also sign two years later copies of THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS by the same publisher. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most famous children's books ever published here signed by the subject of the book. Many have praised this book, but perhaps novelist Sir Walter Besant's remark is the most insightful: "It admits us into a state of being which, until it was written, was not only unexplored but undiscovered." Very light rubbing to the spine tips and corners, spine a bit sunned. Near Fine in a somewhat darkened, Very Good slipcase [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Hunting of the Snark

The Hunting of the Snark

by Carroll, Lewis [Dodgson, Charles]
London: Macmillan and Co., 1876. First Edition in Presentation Bi. First edition in variant presentation binding of scarlet cloth (intended to match Alice in Wonderland) stamped in gilt, all edges gilt. Though typically found in buff cloth with black stamping, Lewis Carroll wrote to his publisher ordering copies in various colors stamped in gilt, intended for his give friends as presentation copies, requesting such as "100 bound in red and gold, 20 in dark blue and gold, 20 in white vellum and gold." First issue with "baker" not "butcher" on page 83. Binder's ticket on rear paste down. Good+. Cloth shows several small stains, gilt lightly rubbed but generally bright. Spine cloth darkened, chipped at ends, corners frayed, front outer joint partially split, hinge at rear open and binding a bit fragile. A very scarce issue of a book whose author proclaimed it "didn't mean anything but nonsense," which has nonetheless emotionally resonated with and beguiled readers ever since its publication. Good.

Studies in Song.

by [CARROLL, Lewis] SWINBURNE, Algernon Charles.
London, Chatto and Windus 1880. First edition, Lewis Carroll's copy with ownership inscription "C. Dodgson 1886". 8vo., original dark blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine. A very good copy. A pleasing association. In April 1865, Carroll (real name: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) recorded a visit to Dante Gabriel Rossetti thus: 'We went to call on Rossetti. We found him at home, and his friend Swinburne also in the room, whom I had not met before." Elsewhere Carroll is noted for his passion for Swinburne's sensual and 'scandalous' poetry. Stuart Dodgson Collingwood in "The Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll" makes the comment, "Another excellent parody 'Atalanta in Camden-Town' exactly hit off the style of that poet who stands alone and unapproached among the poets of the day, and whom Mr Dodgson used to call "the greatest living master of language". Original Celluloid of the Queen of Hearts from Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland.

by [Disney, Walt; Carroll, Lewis.]
[Burbank, CA]: [Walt Disney Studios], [1951]., 1951 9" x 9", within a 15" x 15" frame. Gouache on celluloid drawing of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, holding a flamingo mallet, colored in green, yellow, black, red, and white, with a gray background, in a glossy black frame. Fine. Overall, a bright and exemplary cel from the classic 1951 Disney film.Walt Disney's animated film Alice in Wonderland (1951) is based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1872). Walt Disney was inspired by Carroll's books from a young age, and his early silent "Alice Comedies" in the 1920s showed the imaginative author's influence on him. Disney purchased the rights to Tenniel's Alice illustrations in 1931 with the idea of turning the books into a film, but it wasn't until 1951 that the project was finally completed. Featuring the voices of Kathryn Beaumont, Ed Wynn, Sterling Holloway and others, the film received a lukewarm reception when it was released, but has since come to be regarded as one of Disney's finest feature-length films. Like other hand-drawn Disney films, Alice in Wonderland required hundreds of thousands of hand-drawn cels (24 images equated to only a single second of animation) and the loving labor of hundreds of artists.. First Edition. Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]
